As a Groom: How to Look Good in Your Wedding Photography⁣

Not looking stiff & unnatural is harder than you’d think, but with a few tips from us you’ll be super confident in front of the camera on your big day.

In our heads, we all know how to look good in wedding photography. We’ve seen hundreds of real weddings and browsed countless fancy celebrity nuptials, so we all know just how to smile and be happy on film. However, in reality many couples become nervous wrecks as soon as the camera is pointed at them, losing all sense of naturality and joy – replacing their once happy faces with anxious grimaces! All teeth and no smile! This is common and understandably so. Unless your life is somehow intertwined in show business, you’re probably not used to having your picture taken, and so the whole process is fairly unfamiliar territory.

The good news is that we have some expert tips on how to look good in your wedding photos that will help take you from gloomy groom, to the best looking groom in the room.

How to Look Good in Wedding Photography⁣ as a Groom

Find a Photographer that You Trust

Our first two tips are simple steps you need to take before you even step in front of a camera. When you ask ‘how to look good in wedding photography’, a large chunk of the answer comes down to how good your photographer is and how do you feel around them.

Leaving aside their photography skills, you will never look good in your wedding photography if you don’t feel comfortable around the photographer. With that in mind, when searching for the right photographer, don’t simply base your decision on whether you like their work or not (obviously that is massively important!), but decide also if you actually like them! Browse their bio, cruise their testimonials and scan their Google reviews for glimpses of how they are as a person. Once you’ve decided that they’re right for you, it’s time to move onto point number 2.

Plan an Engagement Shoot

After a Zoom call or coffee meeting has cemented in your mind that this wedding photographer is worth the leap, arranging an engagement shoot is a good way to seal the deal. It’s also the perfect practice run for couples to get used to being in front of the camera. A short session with a good photographer will help to eliminate any nervous ticks or unflattering posing habits that you didn’t even know you had!

Wedding Photography Posing Tips for the Groom

Take a Breath

The simplest trick to look good in your wedding photography, is to breath. Concentrating on your breathing throughout the shoot will help you to relax, and in turn make everything easier, plus you’ll look ten times more smouldering! In particular, if you take a breath before the photographer takes their shot it’ll do amazing things for your posture, as it’ll automatically straighten your shoulders, while tucking in that beer belly.

What to Do With Your Hands

A very common question when being photographed for anything that doesn’t involve holding something, is what and where to put your hands. The key is obviously to make them look as natural as possible. If you’re in a resting position, then hands in pockets works perfectly. Just remember to keep a little bit of your hand on show, burying your hands in your pockets can look a little odd, so keep your thumbs out or only place your hand within the pocket. In general, you’ll often find that if one hand is kept busy, then the other seems to relax just fine on its own – so look for appropriate props or surfaces.

Forget About the Camera

Easier said than done, we know. But if you’re really struggling with nerves, or you’re unable to relax, look away from the camera. Not every shot has to be down the barrel, in fact the best ones are usually when the groom is looking off into the distance or when he is laughing at a joke from the photographer. In that split second you’re not in the middle of an anxious photoshoot, you’re simply having a great time – and that’s what your photographer will capture.
